How to shop Skin Care
Start with a cleanser that suits your skin
Your cleanser sets up everything that follows. If you wear makeup or sunscreen, start with an oil or balm. The Sydoni Skin Silk Melt Cleansing Balm melts into an oil that lifts makeup and SPF. Follow it with a gentle foam, like the Teluris Hydro Purification Foam Cleanser, which Teluris describes as cleansing without that tight, stripped feeling. Oily skin often likes a foam on its own. Dry skin may only need a balm at night and water in the morning.
Hydrate and treat: toners, serums and moisturizers
Next, add water-based layers, then seal them in. Go from thinnest to thickest: toner, serum, then moisturizer.
- Dry or tight skin: the Enudium Recondition Barrier Cream pairs ceramides with omegas 3, 6 and 9 to support the skin barrier.
- Sensitive skin: BEJOU formulated the Clear Confidence Moisturizer for sensitive skin. It is lightweight and non-comedogenic.
- Breakouts: ZVYK Confidence Patch Be You hydrocolloid patches are made for acne-prone skin and help you keep your hands off a spot.
- Oily days: a weekly clay mask, like the Yemi Cosmetics Detoxifying Clay Mask, helps absorb excess oil. Yemi made it with melanin-rich and sensitive skin in mind.
New to actives like glycolic acid or retinol? Add one at a time and patch test first.
Finish with SPF every morning
Sunscreen is the last step of your morning routine, every day, in every season. Black Girl Sunscreen says its Make It Hybrid SPF 50 leaves no white cast. For your body, the Espieve SPF 25 Mineral Body Spray is a sheer mineral option. Reapply after swimming, sweating or a long day outside.
What order should I apply my skincare in?
Go from thinnest to thickest. In the morning: cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, then SPF. At night, skip the SPF and add treatments like masks or spot patches. If you use a cleansing balm, it comes first at night to lift off makeup and sunscreen before a second, gentler cleanse.
What's the difference between a cleansing balm and a foam cleanser?
A cleansing balm turns into an oil on your skin. It breaks down makeup, sunscreen and excess oil, then rinses away with water. A foam cleanser is water-based and lathers. It cleans the skin itself. Many people use both at night: balm first, foam second. In the morning, one gentle cleanse is usually enough.
Do you have products for acne-prone skin?
Yes. Look for oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers and spot care made for acne-prone skin, like ZVYK hydrocolloid patches and the BEJOU Clear Confidence Moisturizer. Start new products one at a time. If breakouts are painful or don't settle, check in with a dermatologist.
Will sunscreen leave a white cast on deeper skin tones?
It depends on the formula. Classic mineral sunscreens can look chalky on deeper skin. Hybrid and tinted formulas tend to blend more easily. Black Girl Sunscreen says its SPF 30 and SPF 50 formulas leave no white cast. Rub sunscreen in well, give it a minute to set, then apply makeup on top.
