Hairbrella: The Rain Hat, Reinvented

By AMP Beauty · Oct 11, 2026 · 2 min read

Tracey Pickett watched rain ruin salon appointments growing up in Atlanta. After 65 prototypes, the former corporate attorney launched Hairbrella, the first-ever satin-lined rain hat.

Founder Stories · Brand Spotlight

Be honest: how many times has a surprise shower undone a fresh press, a twist-out or a brand-new install? Tracey Pickett grew up watching that happen every time clouds rolled over her Atlanta hair salon. Years later, she reinvented the rain hat.

“We can’t stop the rain, but we can stop it from stopping you!”
— Tracey Pickett, founder of Hairbrella

Meet the founder behind Hairbrella, the Black- and woman-owned Atlanta brand that made the first-ever satin-lined rain hat.

Umbrellas, newspapers and plastic bags

As a child in Southwest Atlanta, Tracey watched women of all ages scramble for an umbrella, a newspaper or a plastic bag at the first sign of rain, all to protect the time and money they had just spent on their hair. It seemed to rain every time she went to the salon herself.

The problem followed her. In law school, rain ruined her hair on the way to an on-campus interview. Later, at a Fortune 500 company, she saw it affect women from all walks of life.

65 prototypes later

Tracey searched for something that combined fashion and function and found nothing. So she took matters into her own hands. After 65 prototypes and countless focus groups, she left corporate law and launched Hairbrella in 2016.

“Hairbrella was born, not out of vanity but out of necessity.”
— Tracey Pickett

The result is a 100% waterproof hat with a satin lining, an adjustable band, a UV-blocking visor and a hidden pocket it folds into, so it can live in your purse or glove compartment until the forecast turns. The design is patented, Tracey has shared her story on Good Morning America, and the rain hat holds a 4.9-star rating from more than 1,400 reviews on Hairbrella’s site.
